Trying Hard Doesn't Accomplish Playoff Glory

Written by: Sef Gold
By: Sef Gold The phrase “try hard,” which is usually synonymous with losing, appears far too often these days as a reason why a team should beat a clearly superior squad. This ‘put Rudy in the game,' underdog mentality provides a less than sound argument for predicting an upset. When its post-season time in professional sports, anyone who doesn’t try hard will soon be reduced to the spectator role. The regular season, however, sheds a different light. The season can be compared to going out with friends to a sports bar. There’s no dress code yet some in the group will sport more formal attire, while others will wear a comfortable jeans and t-shirt outfit. Look at this same group in a club where a dress code exists, and everyone will have on something nice. This is the situation in the playoffs. Not every team makes the post-season 'club' and those who do pass the ‘dress code’ of trying. Every player will bring their best effort in each game, yet some teams are simply more talented than the others. At the end of the day, the best team will win and the extra effort is just another characteristic of being a professional. E-mail Sef: sef@afcnorthtalk.com
